Ross Alvey – Chartered Accountant, Director
In 1995 I was employed as an accountant by Michael O'Dea in his accounting practice, O'Dea & Co. I had completed my Bachelor of Commerce at Nelson Polytechnic the previous year and was working in the finance department at the polytechnic. The role at O'Dea & Co was my first real accounting job and I had a lovely view of the carpark from our then offices at the top of Trafalgar Street.
Over the next 5 years I learnt the practical side of accounting and in 2000 Michael offered me partnership and we formed O'Dea & Co Limited. At this time Michael moved into business development leading a small team working with businesses to improve and drive their systems and performance. I concentrated on tax and the compliance side of the business.
In 1998 I was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants and in 2000 achieved my Certificate for Public Practice. In 2005 Michael was unfortunately diagnosed with an illness that meant he was unable to continue in the company and eventually resigned from O'Dea & Co Ltd that same year. Upon Michael's resignation I became the sole director and in 2008 and after numerous suggestions formed the company name, My Accountant Limited. At this time we also moved to our new office in Church Street to a building developed by Mike and Alison O'Dea.
My Accountant Ltd is an approved company with the Institute, this means we have to keep up with the accounting standards as issued by the Institute and our work is reviewed every 3 years. I enjoy working with all types of clients and our company offers a level of personal service that a small team can provide.
On a personal level, I was born in Nelson and spent a few years in Christchurch both working and attending university. In 1992 I made the decision to return to Nelson to complete my degree and to take advantage of the better weather and lifestyle on offer here. I enjoy a variety of sports and currently play soccer. I live in Annesbrook with my cat, Spud.
